As Another Year Grinds to a Halt, A Few Quick Words on 2012...

And so another year is over... another year in which I ended up writing considerably less than I was hoping, but did learn some useful things about writing.

Without a shadow of a doubt, my greatest discovery of the year was one I've made very recently, namely that I have a valid excuse for not being as productive as other writers. You see, it's all my evil day job's fault!

Now I hear what you're saying. Other authors have evil day jobs, too, and they still manage to write a few thousand words each day. True. But these authors probably don't have my day job. You see, my day job involves a fair bit of writing. So much writing, in fact, that it completely uses up the part of my brain that deals with words and emotions, leaving me with very little energy to go about my own writing afterwards. Other writers probably don't have this problem because their day jobs don't require them to flex their writers' muscles. Mine does, unfortunately, and it's making me rather less productive than I could wish.

Now this may not come as much of an epiphany to you, but to me, it was. It took me ten years to realise how much the nature of my day job is affecting my writing – ten years during which I hardly made any progress on my magnum opus and frequently thought I was too lazy and undisciplined to be a writer, even though I knew on a rational level that I'm neither lazy nor undisciplined. And then, bang. Suddenly, I made the connection. In retrospect, I'm amazed I didn't make it years ago. But it has had a positive effect, in that I've become a little more forgiving of the glacial speed at which I write. This may not sound like a good thing to some of you, but trust me, to me, it is.

As for the other things I learned in 2012, well, I've mainly become a much better writer on a technical level. When I look now at the stories I produced just half a year ago, when I first began to write smut, I find many cringe-inducing flaws. I'll find myself thinking, Don't use that word! It's unsexy! Or, Don't use so many dialogue tags! It looks amateurish! Or, Don't interrupt the action with observations! It will ruin the flow of the scene! Or the greatest cliché of all: Show, don't tell, for heaven's sake! Don't tell your reader your heroine is aroused; show that she's aroused!

Sadly, many of my early stories – which feature all the above mistakes and more – are only now getting published, putting me in the unenviable position of having to promote work which I know is seriously flawed. As a die-hard perfectionist, I hate that sort of thing. All I want to do is take out my red pen and correct all the mistakes I come across, but I can't...

Oh, well. Live and learn, eh? That's my goal for 2013. Learn to become a better writer, and hopefully become a more productive writer, as well.

I can dream, can't I?

Oh, and best wishes for 2013, everyone. :-)

Sunday Seven: A Few More New Zealand Photos

I promised you some more New Zealand photos from my 'real' camera a while ago, so here they are...

Lake Wanaka tree

A long exposure of my favourite tree in all of New Zealand, just off the shore of Lake Wanaka. If only the sunset had been a bit more impressive that night... and the water level a bit lower... and the wind still...

Lake Tekapo

A few lone pines on the edge of Lake Tekapo, one of New Zealand's largest lakes.

Duntroon>

Roof decoration in Duntroon. Sadly, the restaurant beneath the roof was closed for renovation. Too bad -- I would have loved to see the interior!

Kea

A kea (snow parrot) I photographed on the road from Te Anau to Milford Sound, which got a massive amount of snow the night we arrived at Milford Sound. The road has two parking lots where birds gather to beg tourists for food. This kea started rummaging though my camera bag the moment I turned my back on it for a second. It was bold as brass.

We saw many great signs in New Zealand, including a brilliant sign pointing to Shag Point (a shag, of course, being a type of sea lion). I loved this particular sign for its sheer exoticism. Yes, we did see penguins in New Zealand (about two hundred of them, I reckon), and yes, we did see a few crossing the road when we left the colony at Oamaru late at night. Thankfully, we were driving slowly, as instructed. :-)

Lake Te Anau

The remains of an old jetty off the shore of Lake Te Anau. I love taking long exposures like this, but again, the sunset was disappointing.

Milford Sound

The entrance to Milford Sound from the foreshore walk. I took a lot of pictures here -- more than in the fjord itself, which, while very impressive to visit, doesn't really lend itself to photography.

And this concludes my New Zealand photography for now...

Best Bondage Erotica 2013 Out Now!

I was so busy last week that I forgot to mention that the first erotic story I ever wrote has been published! It's called 'The Longest Afternoon' and it's one of 22 stories featured in Best Bondage Erotica 2013, a bondage anthology which is now available in e-book format, although the paper version of the book won't be released until mid-December. Best Bondage Erotica 2013 was edited by the redoubtable Rachel Kramer Bussel, who also has a story in it. Other contributors include Elizabeth Coldwell, Sommer Marsden, Shoshanna Evers, Evan Mora, Tiffany Reisz and Andrea Dale, so you know you're in for a good read...

The blurb for my 4,200-word story:

Melanie has been tied to a chair by her Dom, Steve. She's been in the chair for a long time, and she's getting distinctly uncomfortable. As she waits for Steve to do whatever it is he's planning to do, her mind drifts to all the various possibilities. But when Steve finally reveals what he's expecting from her, she's caught completely by surprise...

**********

Opening paragraphs:

The heat was the worst. The heat, and the fact that she had to go to the toilet, ASAP.

It hadn't been like this the last time he had tied her up. She'd been on their bed then, which was a nice and comfy place. Moreover, he had used her quickly, so quickly that she'd been astonished at how soon it had been over. She guessed “furious” was the right word to describe it. Furious and brutal and, well, memorable.

Nor had it been like this the last time he had tied her to a chair. They'd been in Paris at the time, in a hotel where everything seemed to be at least 100 years old. The chair to which he had bound her had been a leather armchair, soft enough to be comfortable and old enough to be stylish, and some of its antique beauty had seemed to rub off on her. She'd felt elegant sitting in that chair, whose color perfectly matched the black of her corset and stockings. Yes, she'd felt elegant, despite the fact that her legs were spread wide and she was wearing a ball gag that made her drool. And although Steve had lashed her with both words and whips, she'd enjoyed the experience, because it was so very iconic and because she had always wanted to be part of such an opulent tableau.

She did not want to be part of this tableau. She did not want to be sitting here in their messy living room on this cheap and nasty IKEA chair, bound with a type of rope which she normally didn't mind but which now chafed horribly against her sweaty skin. Nor did she want to be sitting here in front of the window, bathed in sunlight on what was probably the hottest day of the year.

Sweat was running in rivulets down her naked back and between her breasts. It was pooling on the seat of the plastic IKEA chair that was her prison, and was making her skin both itchy and sticky. A few times already she'd felt a stab of discomfort as she had wriggled in her chair, only to feel her skin tear off the smooth, white plastic with a ripping sound. It hurt, and not in the way she liked.

And then there was the fact that she had to go to the loo. This was a problem she hadn't encountered before, as Steve generally had his way with her long before her bladder filled up. This time, though, he seemed hell-bent on keeping her waiting. And since the luxury Sunday morning breakfast to which he had treated her had involved a large pot of tea as well as two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice, and since it was now well into the afternoon, the pressure on her bladder was getting intense.

**********

Want to know how this ends? Then get yourself a copy of Best Bondage Erotica 2013 here...

I should warn you, though -- 'The Longest Afternoon' wasn't just the first story I ever wrote; it's also easily the dirtiest thing I've ever written. If you're at all squeamish about bodily fluids, you may want to give this one a miss, although you should of course seek the book out for the remaining 21 stories.

Happy reading!

Friday Five: 9 November

This week's Friday Five...

Greatest source of joy this week:
A toss-up between Barack Obama being re-elected in the US and two of my very short stories being accepted for publication, also in the US. It will be a while before the anthology featuring my stories sees the light of day, but I'm already proud to be part of it!

Greatest disappointment of the week:
Being told by one of my publishers that two anthologies to which I've contributed, and which were scheduled to be released this month, have been pushed back until February and March 2013, respectively. I'm sad about this, as my contributions to these anthologies are probably my best stories to date, and I was looking forward to unveiling them.

Greatest laugh I had this week:
Buying a subscription to one stock-photo site, only to find after paying that the photos I need for my upcoming covers are in fact from another stock-photo site. It was the rather fitting culmination of a long day on which I did many stupid things, such as leaving my sushi at the take-away place where I'd bought it, ordering the wrong drink at my favourite tea place, parking badly, etc. Oh, well. We all have those days, right? Right? (Thankfully, my subscription to the wrong stock-photo site is not a waste of money; I'm getting some very good photos out of the deal, at a very sharp price. I'll just have to take out a subscription to the other site, as well...)

Greatest 'aha!' moment of the week:
The realisation that two short stories I abandoned a few months ago may well make a decent novelette if I put them together and add some bits in between. So glad those stories weren't a complete waste of time, after all...

Most UNF-y GIF of the week:

Daniel Craig

Oh, Daniel.

*dissolves into puddle*

And that's all for this week. I should have more exciting news next week...

Thursday 25 October 2012

Friday Five: 26 October

Greatest discovery of the week:
My current work assignment is the easiest one I've had in a long, long time. Which is great, as it leaves me with a lot of writing time.

Most time-consuming thing I did this week:
Sort through all the stock photos I've bookmarked over the last few months, looking for appropriate cover images for my upcoming self-published release. I had to sift through hundreds of photos and file them in a manner which will make it easier for me to find them next time I need cover images. I now have about a dozen stock-photo folders (I'm resisting the urge to say 'binders') full of elegant women, slutty women, cuffed women, bigger women, women in schoolgirl uniforms, men in suits, topless men, fully clad couples, nearly naked couples, legs in stockings, vampires, and so on. It was good to make a systematic inventory, but God, did it take up a lot of valuable writing time.

Best book I read this week (mostly by dint of it being the only book I read this week):
One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, a novel about a disgraced journalist who tries to redeem herself by embarking on an ambitious assignment left to her by her deceased mentor, which sees her talking to one hundred seemingly random people and trying to figure out why her mentor wanted her to write about them. A heart-warming and life-affirming story, it has romance, mystery, drama, plot twists and several larger-than-life characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it despite not being overly impressed with the author's writing style.

Weirdest thing I did this week:
Watch the first season of Blackadder. I've always loved the second, third and fourth seasons of the show, which revolve around the hyper-intelligent and cunning Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) and his incomparably stupid sidekick Baldrick (Tony Robinson). I only just got round to watching the first season, in which Blackadder is a very stupid prince and Baldrick his rather more intelligent retainer. I found it distinctly odd, and frankly somewhat disturbing, to see such familiar characters in such a role reversal. I did enjoy the show, but I much prefer the second, third and fourth seasons. It's amazing how vastly the show improved once Ben Elton came on board...

Most beautiful erotic photo of the week:
This one took my breath away. Seriously, how beautiful is that?

Blindfolded girl

And that's me done for another week...

Get Them Now: Two Freebies!

Just so as you know, over the next few days you’ll be able to pick up two of my short stories (each over four thousand words) for free!

The first story is from the upcoming Xcite anthology Lipstick Lovers (scheduled for a 17 January release). It’s a story about a young woman, Lauren, who runs a successful corset shop. One day, she receives a request to close her shop for a private fitting for a celebrity client. The celebrity is award-winning singer Maisie James, who turns out to be as interested in Lauren as Lauren is in her. Soon the temperature in the fitting room is rising as Lauren gets to know every curve of Maisie’s famous body…

Xcite have just published a teaser for this anthology, a five-story collection named after my contribution, Corsetry for Beginners, which will be free between 24th and 28th October. I’m quite chuffed with my story, so if you’re in the mood for some hot woman-on-woman action, by all means get yourself a copy!

The second story is 'Tricked', in which a young sub called Brooke gets, well, tricked into accepting a caning. Brooke fears being caned as much as the next sub, but her devious dom, Stuart, finds a way to get her to accede to his request that she undergo a caning, anyway. A request involving his cock, which he knows she loves…

This story was written for the anthology Tops and Bottoms: Discipline Delights, which was released a little while ago. It's now been published, along with four other stories from Tops and Bottoms, as a mini-collection entitled Pink Cheeks and Chocolate, which you can buy on Amazon for a mere dollar. And between 27th and 31st October it will be free…

So pick up your freebies and enjoy! And if you like what you’re reading, please consider leaving a review on Amazon or the Xcite website.

Best Bondage Erotica 2013 Available for Pre-Order

By now I’ve safely returned from New Zealand, where I had a great holiday. I’ve finished the gargantuan task of sifting through all my photos, and have just begun editing them. I may post a few pictures over the next few weeks. First, though, I have some publication news!

The Cleis anthology Best Bondage Erotica 2013, which features the first ever erotica story I wrote, 'The Longest Afternoon', is available for pre-order from Amazon. The book was edited by the redoubtable Rachel Kramer Bussel, and features 22 short stories by quite a few good authors. It will be available from Amazon from mid-November onwards, although Amazon currently says 13 December. If you’re in the US and are thinking of ordering the book, by all means have a look at the editor’s blog post, because she’s doing a book give-away – pre-order this book, get another one of hers for free. Worth looking into, I'd say!

Friday Five

The week that was summed up in five short items...

What made me laugh
Bill Bailey's new show, Qualmpeddler. It's a bit disjointed, but as always, funny as hell. Bailey is a tremendous performer.

What made me cry
The story I'm writing, provisionally entitled The One Who Got Away. I thought when I started it that it would be straight-up smut, but it's proving to be quite the emotional roller coaster. (Oh, well. Erotic romance is allowed to get emotional, right?)

What made me happy
Receiving a work assignment from a client I hadn't worked for for four years. Best thing of all? It's a relatively easy assignment which should leave me plenty of time to write over the next few months.

What I'm most looking forward to
My upcoming holiday. Which reminds me -- I need to do some planning!

What impressed me with its sheer beauty
This unbelievably sultry photo of Coco Rocha for Yves Saint Laurent.

My First Story to Be Published

Tops and Bottoms

The day before yesterday was a special day for me in that it marked the publication of the first short-story anthology I've had the honour of being included in, an Xcite book called Tops and Bottoms: Discipline Delights. It contains twenty BDSM stories about the joys and tribulations of punishment, and was edited by the ever-reliable Elizabeth Coldwell, who has a story in it herself.

My story, 'Tricked', is about a female sub, Brooke, whose Dom, Stuart, has been trying for some time to get her to accept a caning. It contains a fair bit of leather-belt-and-flogger action, as well as some subtle but effective torture. Honesty commands me to say that it's not my best story (it's a bit of a scene, really, rather than a story), but it certainly has its moments, and I had a lot of fun writing it, apart from the all-nighter I had to pull to ensure that I'd meet the deadline. God, I get tired just thinking of that night...

A brief excerpt from my story:

When her upper back was burning as hot as her bottom, Stuart lifted himself off her slightly and told her to turn around. She did as he told her, suppressing a moan of pain when the tender flesh of her buttocks and back met the mattress below. But all her discomfort was forgotten when he inched forward on her chest and pressed the tip of his cock against her lips.

‘Lick it,’ he ordered.

His musky smell flooded her nostrils, making her mouth water for his taste. Her pussy clenched. She reached out her tongue and licked, her wet tongue flickering all over the eye of his hard cock, lapping up the little bit of precome which was oozing from it. However, before she could wrap her lips around it and do all the things she wanted to do to it, he withdrew himself from her mouth, smiling smugly at her, clearly taking a sadistic delight in denying her himself.

She couldn’t contain herself any longer. ‘Please, sir,’ she moaned. ‘Please, let me have it.’

He shook his head at her. ‘Not yet, pet. Not yet.’

Friday Five

Word count for the week
Just under 10,000. That's quite productive, considering the level of my Internet addiction.

What I learned this week
The Empire State Building was built in just fifteen months. Construction was completed two months ahead of schedule and $2 million under budget. What an amazing achievement.

What shocked me this week
The fact that there are male erotica authors who tag their stories like Pornhub videos ('gaping hole', 'cum-drenched', and so on) and don't understand why women aren't buying their stuff.

What made me laugh this week
As a movie buff and fantasy fan, I had a good giggle over this:

What I listened to this week
Cold Chisel, 'Flame Trees'

I've been pondering whether this song has any potential for a literary adaptation. Of the smutty variety, naturally.
